The story of Dr Feelgood, four men in cheap suits who crashed out of Canvey Island in the early '70s, sandpapered the face of rock'n'roll, leaving all that came before a burnt-out ruin - four estuarine John-the-Baptists to Johnny Rotten's anti-Christ. Taking London by storm, they sped through Europe and conquered the UK with No 1 chart success, before imploding just as punk was born and America beckoned with open arms. Contributions from members of The Clash, Blondie and The Sex Pistols join Dr Feelgood with collaborators Jools Holland and Alison Moyet to tell the story of Canvey, '70s England and the greatest local band in the world.
Read more ›Rarely in the long history of British rock'n'roll has there been a story of such depth, magnitude and sheer turbulence as that of the Cockney Rejects. There have been many "rockumentaries" over the years, but director Richard England looked between the lines and realised that there was something very different here - a story spanning over a hundred years, a story of the most impoverished place in Britain, it's people, culture and way of life that is now all but extinct, that in turn gave birth to one of the most ferocious rock'n'roll bands that ever lived.

Written in his own unmistakable voice, this is a frank and fascinating account of a geezer's life in the music business. Jah Wobble begins by offering the most authentic insider's account of the beginning of punk rock yet written, but there's much more to him than that. His is an eventful life, as the celebrated ups - PiL's The Metal Box, 90s hit Visions Of You with Sinead O'Connor - are balanced by major downs - chronic alcoholism and marital breakdown. It begins with an East End childhood in a London barely recovered from the War and ends with Wobble finally turning his back on London that no longer feels like home. Through the book Wobble tell it like he sees it: his opinions of the great and good from Malcolm Mclaren to Peter Gabriel to Brian Eno to Iain Sinclair are refreshingly disrespectful. Oh and if you ever wondered how got his name, the answer is here: his teenage pal Sid Vicious gave it to him when he drunkenly slurred Wobble's real name, John Wardle.
Perhaps how one leaves a party is more important than one’s entrance. Green on Red's Dan Stuart has chosen to make his final full length record with producer/guitarist Danny Amis: a founder of Los Straitjackets and former member of The Raybeats. They both currently reside in Mexico City and have individually worked previously with Twin Tones and Sonido Gallo Negro’s leader Gabriel López at T-Vox Recording. The vinyl LP is a companion piece to a novel by the same name, and the two will be released together this July in one package through Cadiz Music, along with a CD with six extra tracks and a four CD audio version of the novel. Exclusive versions and other special one-offs will be available through Pledge Music. Both works are a sort of noir travelogue through foreign landscapes real and imagined, sublime and horrific, and question whether love can survive in a world of violence and betrayal. The record features players from Mexico, Italy, New York & San Francisco, while the novel bounces between Oaxaca, NYC and CDMX. Stuart's alter ego Marlowe Billings is our musical and fictional tour guide, indeed one could listen while reading and double the pleasure. The record is the last of the Marlowe trilogy, with the novel being the second; one can only hope Mr. Stuart will eventually deliver a third book to complete the series and leave the world if not better off, then at least slightly less banal.
